Bright future Young swimmer Angel Otom reaches Paralympic final

Young Filipina para swimming sensation Angel Otom has demonstrated her prowess at the Southeast Asian level by advancing to the medal round of the women’s 50-meter backstroke S5 in the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Angel Otom, an extraordinary talent from Olongapo City, was born with no left arm and an underdeveloped right arm. Her remarkable achievement includes a finish of seventh overall in the heats with a time of 44.03 seconds, securing her place in the final on September 3, Manila time. Otom expressed her pride and excitement about the experience, stating, “It was a very good experience, I feel very proud. I also got nervous as an athlete, but overall, it was fun.”

In heat 1, Otom finished fourth and will compete alongside Shenggao He (41.31) and Liu Yu (42.59) from China, and Turkiye’s Sumeyye Boyacci (43.84). Additionally, world record holder Dong Lu of China led heat 2 and the overall tally with an impressive sub-40 time (39.48). Other finalists include Iryna Poida of Ukraine (43.81), Tully Kearney of Great Britain (43.89), and Sevilay Ozturk of Turkiye (45.34).

Otom’s journey to the Paralympics is a testament to her dedication and skill. At just 21 years old and a student at UP Diliman, she has already made a significant mark in para swimming. She captured four gold medals in the 2023 ASEAN Para Games, following three golds in the prior edition when she was just 19.

National para swimming assistant coach Bryan Ong highlighted Otom’s commitment, noting, “She’ll definitely go all out in the final. It’s six hours from now, so for now, Angel will rest as we mentally prepare her for the next race.” This underscores the rigorous preparation and mental fortitude required at this level of competition.

Following her 50m backstroke final, Otom has another opportunity to make history in the 50m butterfly on Friday, September 6, Manila time. Her continued participation in multiple events showcases her versatility and relentless pursuit of excellence in the sport.
