Allain Ganapins Paris Paralympics Journey Ends in Round of 16

In a gripping display of skill and determination, Filipino para taekwondo athlete Allain Ganapin showcased his prowess on the global stage at the Paris Paralympics. Despite his valiant efforts, Ganapin’s journey came to an end in the round of 16.

Three years after missing his Tokyo Paralympics debut due to COVID-19, Ganapin demonstrated why he deserved his second chance. Competing in the men’s K44 -80kg category, Ganapin began his campaign with an impressive come-from-behind victory against Hadi Hassanzada of the Refugee Paralympic Team. Trailing at 7-10 with just over two minutes remaining, Ganapin launched a series of powerful body kicks, including a decisive turning kick that secured his 22-13 win.

Less than an hour later, Ganapin faced a formidable opponent in Abulfaz Abuzarli of Azerbaijan, a gold medalist from the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Taiyuan, China. Entering the round of 16 as an underdog, Ganapin fought tenaciously, overturning an early 0-4 deficit to achieve an 8-4 lead with four consecutive body kicks. However, Abuzarli’s successful challenge of a video replay marked the turning point, resulting in an 11-9 lead for the Azerbaijani athlete. A subsequent penalty against Ganapin finalized the score at 12-9, ending his Paris Paralympics run.

Ganapin’s journey to the Paris Paralympics has been marked by resilience and determination. Born with a congenital right arm amputation, he overcame significant challenges to earn his place on the world stage. His performance in Paris was a testament to his skill and perseverance, highlighting his potential to compete among the best para taekwondo athletes globally.

Allain Ganapin’s exit from the Paris Paralympics, while disappointing, underscored his incredible journey and the indomitable spirit of the Filipino athlete. His performance not only showcased his talent but also served as an inspiration to many.
