Apple has officially unveiled iOS 18, and its release is eagerly awaited. This version promises substantial upgrades and entirely new tools.
Expected to roll out in mid-September 2024, iOS 18 will be available for recent iPhone models, with some features limited to the latest devices.
Release Date
Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024, confirming that the update will be available ‘later this year.’ Historically, major iOS updates launch between mid-September, so we anticipate a similar rollout for iOS 18. The update will likely coincide with the launch of the iPhone 16 series, making mid-September the probable release window.
Apple Intelligence
A standout feature of iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence, which is coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This suite includes a smarter Siri, text summarization, writing assistance, and generative image creation. However, these features might be delayed until after the initial rollout.
Redesigned Photos App
iOS 18 introduces the most extensive redesign yet for the Photos app. The app now consolidates into a single view that includes both a photo grid and a dates grid, making it easier to locate specific photos.
There are also new filtering options, such as categories for screenshots and groups. A new ‘Recovered’ album will store items that aren’t in the main gallery to prevent database issues.
Advanced Home Screen Customization
Users can now rearrange app icons and widgets on the Home Screen. You’ll be able to position apps at the bottom or side of the screen, freeing up space for the wallpaper.
Additionally, iOS 18 introduces a dark mode for app icons and allows users to add color tints, enhancing visual customization.
Control Center Upgrades
The Control Center in iOS 18 is getting a significant update. Users can now separate it into distinct function groups like Media and Home.
They will also be able to resize Control Center widgets. For the first time, iOS 18 permits editing which widgets appear on the Lock Screen.
Messages Upgrades
The Messages app in iOS 18 offers new features such as the ability to react to messages using any emoji and schedule messages for future sending.
The app will also support the RCS standard, offering a richer messaging experience. Furthermore, compatible iPhones can send messages via satellite when Wi-Fi and cellular connections are unavailable.
Mail Categorization
iOS 18 enhances the Mail app with new on-device processing capabilities. Emails will be categorized into four folders: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions.
The app will offer easy-to-read digests, allowing users to quickly scan for important emails.
Additional Features
A ‘tap to cash’ feature in the Wallet app will facilitate easier transactions between friends. Event tickets will also feature a more dynamic design.
Face ID authentication is being extended to all iPhone apps, and users can hide apps in a new Hidden Apps folder. The Power Reserve feature will now display the time even when the battery is low.
Compatibility
Any iPhone newer than the iPhone XS will be compatible with iOS 18. However, Apple Intelligence features will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The full list of compatible models includes iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, XS, XR, SE (2nd and 3rd generation).
iOS 18 is set to bring a wealth of new features and enhancements to compatible iPhones. Its expected release in mid-September marks a significant upgrade for iPhone users.
From advanced AI tools to enhanced app functionalities, iOS 18 aims to offer a more personalized and efficient user experience.
