Tropical Storm Enteng (Yagi), the fifth tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines in 2024, is posing a significant threat to much of Luzon and Eastern Visayas. The storm is bringing moderate to torrential rain and enhancing the southwest monsoon, or habagat, which is another critical source of rainfall. The storm has resulted in various emergency responses, including evacuations, suspensions of work and school, and other critical measures.
The onslaught of Tropical Storm Enteng has led to tragic incidents such as the death of a 57-year-old man due to electrocution in Naga City, Camarines Sur. A nursing student from the University of Nueva Caceres, Zain Cortez, shared her grief on Facebook, expressing that despite her efforts to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), she couldn’t save him. The man was checking his flooded shop when the incident occurred, according to the Naga City Police.
In Metro Manila, the Metropolitan Manila Development Agency (MMDA) has suspended its number coding scheme due to continuous rainfall, as reported by Lance Spencer Yu. Meanwhile, in Marikina City, the water level of the Marikina River has decreased from 16.4 meters to 15.2 meters, leading to a downgrade in the alarm level. Despite this, over 3,000 families have sought refuge in evacuation centers.
Efforts to clear streets of fallen trees are underway, with the Mandaluyong City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD) and the local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) actively involved. The forced evacuation of residents from danger zones was also conducted in Barangay San Rafael, Montalban, Rizal.
Heavy flooding has prompted the evacuation of over 100 families in Parañaque City, specifically in Barangay San Dionisio, Barangay Don Galo, and the R. Medina subdivision. The local government is working to ensure the safety of these residents.
Classes in public schools and work in government offices have been suspended in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Calabarzon areas. This preventive measure aims to minimize risks and ensure public safety as the storm and enhanced monsoon continue to affect these regions.
As Tropical Storm Enteng continues to impact the Philippines, the coordinated efforts of local authorities and emergency services are crucial in managing the situation. Monitoring the storm’s progress and adhering to safety advisories remain imperative for all affected residents.
