Volkswagen has jumped into the gaming world by partnering with AirConsole. Now, drivers and passengers can enjoy games right from their cars while they wait for their EVs to charge.
The new feature will debut in VW ID.7 Pro S and Touring Pro S models. But don’t worry, other all-electric ID cars running on ID software 4.0 will get the gaming update soon!
AirConsole uses your smartphone as a controller, and up to four players can join in on the fun. Expect games like Overcooked, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and various racing and puzzle games.
Volkswagen isn’t stopping with just EVs. The company plans to roll out this feature to new combustion engine models like the Passat, Tiguan, Golf, and Golf Estate by 2025.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is aiming high by partnering with Boosteroid to bring AAA games to its cars. Their new MBUX Hyperscreen system features three massive digital displays for epic gaming sessions.
Gamers can use either a Bluetooth controller or their smartphone to compete in over 1,000 games from platforms like Steam and Epic Games. This feature will be available in Europe and North America early next year.
On the flip side, Tesla is moving in the opposite direction. They have stopped supporting Steam games on Models S and X this year, and it’s unclear if they will continue with Models Y or 3.
Some speculate that Tesla is stepping back due to ongoing issues with distracted drivers and Full Self-Driving technology. Elon Musk has also hinted at using car computers for tasks like data processing instead of gaming.
